Stefania Wajszczuk 0572

Involvement of Stefania in the conspiratorial undeground activities, which were aimed at "maintaining the high spirits" during the dark years of German occupation, were recently given further testimony by her son Zbigniew Wajszczuk (0576).

This page is based on the materials given to us recently by Zbigniew and his wife Wanda. They were displayed previously at an exhibit by Barbara Wachowicz "Kamyk na Szancu" (A Pebble on the Rampart), which was devoted to the book describing the Underground Resistance activities during WWII of the Master Scout Aleksander Kaminski and of his heroic Scouts from the clandestine "Szare Szeregi" (The Gray Ranks). The exhibit was shown around the country from March 1991 until May 2002 and was also presented in Warsaw in March and April of 1993, for the 50th anniversary of the famous commando diversion raid carried out by the Boy Scouts at the Arsenal in Warsaw.

... When the exhibit "Kamyk na szancu " (A Pebble on the rampart) was shown for the second time in Warsaw, for the 50th anniversary of the Arsenal diversion raid, a lawyer - Mr Zbigniew Wajszczuk arrived with a gift, which he handed over with the following comment: "I am placing in your hands an unusual document dating back to the Nazi (hitlerite) occupation. It is a hand-transcribed in 1943 copy of a book by Aleksander Kaminski "Kamienie na Szaniec - Opowiadanie o Wojtku i Czarnym" (Rocks on a Rampart - Story of Wojtek and Czarny). This was a first clandestine edition of this book. I lived during the occupation with my parents in Lukow in the Podlasie (province). I remember, how - during the gloomy, dark night of the occupation - we read this book aloud, holding our breaths and full of emotions. My mother, Stefania Wajszczuk, a teacher - deeply involved in the clandestine teaching - decided to hand-copy this book, so it could reach a larger group of readers. That is the way the enclosed pages were generated - a text written using an ink-pencil, and by several people, as evidenced by various handwriting styles. I remember that the book - considering the conspiratorial conditions - had a beautiful  cover in color with an Achor - symbol of "Poland Fighting". This document constitutes a testimony to the veneration accorded by the Poles to this conspiratorial edition of the book by Aleksander Kaminski and to the role it played in awakening the hopes and rousing up the patriotic feelings in this difficult period..."
